The Craft Baskets were constructed in the summer on 2024 from just-harvested wisteria vines. They were marched in Penland School of Craft’s annual Handmade Parade and then installed on The Knoll, a grassy area seen from main campus. Students moved the letters around to spell other words and took photos of and with them. When Hurricane Helene hit, someone moved the baskets to spell “Raft.” They continue to age in place.

The baskets were created with the help of Erin Castellan, Sarah McDowell, Mirrah Johnson, Rachel Brettinger, Lori Johnson, Susan Feagin, Jeff Millow, James Kriegsmann, and Therese Watkins.

Alena Applerose, Zanne Cox, Ashley Pool, and Marianna Popp paraded the letters.
